Why Is My AC Running Constantly?

During the hot Tennessee summer, it's normal for your air conditioner to run more often than it does during milder weather. However, if your system seems to be running non-stop and never quite reaches the temperature you've set on your thermostat, there may be an underlying issue that needs attention. Here are some things that my contribute to a constantly-running AC system:

1. The Outdoor Temperatures Are Extremely High

When temperatures climb into the 90s and beyond, your air conditioner has to work much harder to keep your home comfortable. On particularly hot days, it may run for longer periods to maintain your desired indoor temperature.

If your home is staying comfortable and the system is eventually reaching the thermostat setting, longer run times may be completely normal.

2. Your Air Filter Is Dirty

A dirty air filter restricts airflow, making it more difficult for your HVAC system to cool your home efficiently. As airflow decreases, your air conditioner must run longer to achieve the same results.

Replacing your air filter regularly is one of the easiest ways to improve system performance and efficiency.

3. Your Thermostat Is Set Too Low

Many homeowners set their thermostat much lower than necessary in an attempt to cool their home faster. Unfortunately, this doesn't make the system cool any quicker—it simply causes it to run longer.

For most households, a thermostat setting between 70 and 74 degrees during the summer provides a good balance of comfort and efficiency.

4. Your System Needs Maintenance

Routine maintenance helps keep your HVAC system operating at peak performance. Dirty coils, worn components, low refrigerant levels, and other issues can reduce efficiency and cause your air conditioner to run continuously.

Annual maintenance can help identify and correct these problems before they lead to costly repairs.

5. Your Home Has Air Leaks

If cool air is escaping through gaps around doors, windows, or poorly insulated areas, your air conditioner will have a difficult time maintaining the desired temperature.

Sealing leaks and improving insulation can significantly reduce the workload on your HVAC system.

6. Your Air Conditioner Is Aging

As HVAC systems get older, they naturally become less efficient. If your air conditioner is 10–15 years old or older, it may struggle to keep up with cooling demands, especially during the hottest months of the year.

In some cases, replacing an aging system can lower energy costs while improving comfort.

7. There May Be a Mechanical Problem

Issues such as low refrigerant, frozen evaporator coils, failing capacitors, or malfunctioning components can cause your air conditioner to run longer than normal. These problems typically require professional diagnosis and repair.
