Air Filters 101: What Homeowners Need to Know

Your HVAC system works hard to keep your home comfortable, but one of the simplest parts of the system can make a big difference in how well it performs: the air filter.

Air filters help protect your HVAC equipment from dust, dirt, pet hair, and other debris while also helping improve the quality of the air moving through your home. But not all filters are the same, and choosing the right one matters.



Why Air Filters Are So Important

Your HVAC system constantly pulls air through the return vents, conditions that air, and sends it back into your home. Before that air reaches the equipment, it passes through the filter.


A clean, properly sized filter can help:

  • Protect your HVAC system from dirt and debris

  • Improve airflow

  • Reduce unnecessary strain on the system

  • Help keep indoor air cleaner

  • Support better efficiency

  • Reduce dust buildup throughout your home


When a filter becomes dirty or clogged, your system has to work harder to move air through it. Over time, that can contribute to higher energy use, reduced comfort, and even unnecessary wear on HVAC components.


How Often Should You Change Your Air Filter?

There is no single answer that works for every home.


A common recommendation is to check your filter every 30 days and replace it when it looks dirty. Many standard pleated filters may last around 60 to 90 days under normal conditions.


However, you may need to change your filter more often if:

  • You have pets

  • Someone in your home has allergies

  • You smoke indoors

  • You are completing renovations or construction

  • Your home collects dust quickly

  • Your HVAC system is running heavily during very hot or cold weather

The best habit is simply to check it regularly.


What Does MERV Mean?

When shopping for air filters, you will probably see something called a MERV rating.

MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. It measures how effectively a filter captures airborne particles.


In general, the higher the MERV number, the smaller the particles the filter can capture.

For many residential systems, filters in the MERV 5 to MERV 12 range are commonly used. Higher-rated filters may capture smaller particles, including things like pet dander and finer dust.


However, higher does not always mean better.

A filter that is too restrictive for your HVAC system can reduce airflow and cause the equipment to work harder. Before switching to a significantly higher MERV rating, it is a good idea to check your equipment recommendations or ask an HVAC professional.


Types of HVAC Filters

Fiberglass Filters

These thin, inexpensive filters are primarily designed to protect HVAC equipment from larger dust and debris.

They usually provide relatively basic filtration and often need to be replaced frequently.


Pleated Filters

Pleated filters are one of the most common choices for residential HVAC systems.

Their folded design creates more surface area, allowing them to capture more particles while still maintaining airflow when the proper filter is used.

They are available in several different MERV ratings.


Washable Filters

Some HVAC systems use reusable filters that can be washed instead of thrown away.

These can be convenient, but they must be cleaned properly and allowed to dry completely before being placed back into the system.


Media Filters

Larger media filters are often installed inside a dedicated filter cabinet.

Because they are deeper than a traditional one-inch filter, they can provide more surface area and may last longer between replacements.


HEPA Filtration

True HEPA filtration can capture very small airborne particles, but most standard residential HVAC systems are not designed to simply accept a HEPA filter.

Homes requiring advanced filtration may need a dedicated air-cleaning system or other indoor air quality solution.


Don't Forget the Airflow Arrow

Most disposable air filters have an arrow printed along the edge.

That arrow shows the direction the air should flow through the filter.

In most systems, the arrow should point toward the HVAC equipment or blower, not toward the return grille.


Installing the filter backwards can reduce its effectiveness and potentially affect airflow.


Signs Your Filter May Need to Be Changed

You do not always have to wait for a specific date on the calendar.

Take a look at your filter if you notice:

  • Reduced airflow from your vents

  • More dust around the home

  • The system running longer than usual

  • A visibly gray or dirty filter

  • Increased allergy symptoms indoors

  • Unusual increases in energy usage

Sometimes, something as simple as replacing a dirty filter can make a noticeable difference.


The Right Filter Helps Protect Your Comfort

Air filters may seem like a small part of your HVAC system, but they play an important role in protecting your equipment and maintaining proper airflow.

The key is choosing the right size, right type, and right filtration level for your particular system.
